LaFayette Street Interchange

Project Overview

The Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Lafayette Street Interchange project is a major component of Montgomery County’s overall Lafayette Street Extension project. Currently in the preliminary design phase, lead design firm KCI Technologies, Inc., is developing and exploring ramp configuration alternatives to best serve the project area.

The Lafayette Street Interchange was conceived to help alleviate existing traffic problems and spur economic development in the vicinity of Norristown, PA. The interchange falls between the existing Valley Forge and Norristown interchanges and offers a more direct route for Turnpike motorists to access Norristown, Conshohocken, and interspersed commercial, industrial and residential developments along the east shore of the Schuylkill River.

The Lafayette Street interchange is being designed for cashless tolling. For more information on the Turnpike’s cashless tolling initiative, click here.

What is the Lafayette Street Project?

In concert with the Turnpike-led Lafayette Street Interchange project, Montgomery County is leading the ongoing Lafayette Street Extension Project between the future interchange area and downtown Norristown. Construction of the Lafayette Street Project will significantly improve access to Norristown’s Main Street business district and its riverfront area. It will also reduce congestion on Ridge Pike in Plymouth Township and Norristown and improve business access along the entire Main Street / Ridge Pike – Conshohocken Road corridor.

The project is broken into five phases, as follows:

Phase 1: Extend Lafayette Street toward Conshohocken Road and Diamond Avenue.
Project constructed and open to traffic

Phase 2: Widen and improve Ridge Pike, Diamond Avenue, and Fairfield Road.
Project constructed and open to traffic

Phase 3: Reconstruct and widen existing Lafayette Street, relocate the Schuylkill River Trail, and create a linear park.
Project under construction
