Milepost 53 to Milepost 57 Design

Project Overview

Pittsburgh Interchange

This project section is 4 miles in length and includes widening the existing turnpike mainline to accommodate six 12’ lanes with 12’ on the inside and outside shoulders. Also included in this section’s design are overhead and mainline structure (such as bridges and overpasses) replacements. The estimated construction cost is $125 million. The section begins just west of the Saltsburg Bridge near the Plum Aqua Club in Plum Borough and extends to Northern Pike Road in the Municipality of Monroeville and includes the Pittsburgh Interchange.

Substandard bridge vertical clearances and roadway widths improvements to the Pittsburgh Interchange will also be included. All bridges will be replaced and many of these replacements will be completed during the earliest construction phases of the project. Early-action projects include the Saltsburg Road and Center Road bridge replacement projects.

Corridor Overview
This project is one of three sections within 18 miles of continuous expansion that includes mainline reconstruction and widening, geometry improvements and overhead/mainline bridge replacements. The mainline reconstruction and widening plan is to widen all east- and west-bound travel lanes from two to three in each direction. The limits of this corridor are from Milepost 49 at Oakmont Country Club to Milepost 67 at Irwin Interchange. Below is a graphic showing the roadway configuration before and after widening.

PA Turnpike to close overnight between Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley interchanges

Five-hour closure, westbound only, needed June 19 for bridge beam erection.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the toll road will be closed westbound between Pittsburgh, Exit 57, and Allegheny Valley, Exit 48, starting at 11:59 p.m. on June 19 until approximately 5 a.m. on June 20, weather permitting.

This five-hour closure is needed for crews to safely erect bridge beams for the new overhead bridge which carries traffic on Center Road over the turnpike at milepost 54.95 in Monroeville, Allegheny County.

Drivers are being asked to use the following recommended detour:

WESTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Pittsburgh Interchange:

I-376 west (16 miles) to

I-279 north/Ft. Duquesne Bridge (1 mile) to

PA State Route 28 north (23 miles) to

PA State Route 910 east (Exit 11, Harmarville) (.2 mile)

Left onto Freeport Road (.7 mile)

Reenter I-76 at the Allegheny Valley Interchange.

During the closure, expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads. Message boards will be in place to inform customers of the closure.
